Fake Tech Support Calls

DON’T FALL FOR FAKE TECH SUPPORT

faketechIf you do an internet search on “fake tech support calls”, you get a lot of stories about people who help thieves get dialed into their computers pretending to be tech support for a lot of big name companies like Comcast, Netflix, AT&T, and Verizon, just to name a few (see the links below to read just a few of them!).

The scam usually starts with a phone call, saying we are tech support for (insert company name) and: “You’ve got a virus,” “We need to do routine maintenance,” “We received a call for support,” “We need to update software”, and then they get you to help them dial into your computer. Why? Sometimes it’s to shake you down for money, other times it’s to steal data from you. And if you let them into your point of sale computer, there is a lot of data to steal.

Cyber thieves use many means to get your information – Facebook, LinkedIn, web profiles and even your own website to get your business name, your name and even personal bits of information about you in order to gain your trust.

DO NOT TRUST UNSOLICITED CALLS!

How to protect yourself from telephone tech support scams

If someone claiming to be from tech support calls you:

  • Never give control of your computer to a third party unless you can confirm that it is a legitimate representative of a computer support team with whom you are already a customer.
  • Do not purchase any software or services.
  • Ask if there is a fee or subscription associated with the “service.” If there is, hang up.
  • Take the caller’s information down and immediately report it to your local authorities.
  • Never provide your credit card or financial information to someone claiming to be from tech support.
